THE GEORGE WASHINGTON & MARY ELIZABETH (HOUSE) GRIFFIN FAMILY

George Washington Griffin ("G.W.") was born on May 14, 1883 on his grandfather's farm in Milam county, Texas; he was the son of Joseph Griffin ("Joe") and Susannah Elizabeth Edwards ("Susan"), who were pioneer settlers of the Val Verde community in Milam county. They had moved from Van Zant county in east Texas to Milam county. George had five brothers and four sisters. G.W. went to Thomas Arnold school (High School or Academy) in Salado. The school superintendent offered G.W. a chance to stay with him and go to school, but he felt like he needed to stay with his parents.
On December 30, 1885, G.W.'s future wife, Mary Elizabeth House ("Bettie") was born in Pontotoc, Mississippi; they were married on November 29, 1903 by a Rev. Lewis at the Methodist parsonage in Milam county. Her wedding dress was green with an ivory neck; it also had a bussell. Her hair was black.

G.W. was a short, stocky man with red, curly hair. He was a very kind and sensitive man; when all the children in the area would play "hide and seek" in the freshly plowed fields, G.W. would be out there playing with them.

He also enjoyed hunting squirrels and rabbits. He used to let some of the kids go with him hunting down in the river bottom. In the springtime, he would take his shotgun and push away the leaves to show them the first violets coming up. Little things such as these were very important to his children. G.W. was also a stubborn man and ran the house strictly by the rules. According to relatives, G. W. was a quiet man and he never owned a car. Dwayne Digby said that at one point, G.W. Griffin worked at Ketchem's Laundry; Mart Digby took him to work every day (not sure when this happened). From 1912 - 1914, the Griffin family lived in the old Aiken homeplace located east of Salado, Texas at the present intersection of Royal road and Amity East road. In December, 1914, they moved to Val Verde, Texas. The Griffin homeplace at Val Verde was located just south of the old Parker home (just northeast of the Val Verde Baptist Church). Doris (Griffin) Herrington remembers G.W. Griffin having an appendix operation on a back room table in the drug store in Holland, Texas; Dr. Crosswaite performed the operation.

Bettie's parents were John Jefferson House and Samantha Jane (Arnold) House ("Jane"). Her religious preference was at first Baptist; later, she became Methodist. She came from Pontotoc, Mississippi with her parents when she was only five years old. On April 24, 1927, G.W.'s mother died. Although all of her children helped to take care of her during her final years, Bettie Griffin stayed with the Arnold Roen family in the years prior to her death (304 Greenbriar. Belton, Texas, Bell county). Pearl (Griffin) Digby relayed the following stories about, her mother, Bettie Griffin to Billy Blair:
" Ivy Moore's parents were having a child. My mother went during a flood on horseback to deliver that child".
"My mother also took care of neighbors when they got the flu. She would stay until they were well, then come home. It seems as though the flu arrived about the same time as World War II. One time, my mother got the flu when she returned home from taking care of neighbors. My father took care of her and successfully kept the kids from getting the flu in a three room house".
I believe it was Mattie (Digby) Wesson who recalled that Bettie Griffin always wanted the bills paid immediately. Bettie died on Saturday morning, November 21, 1981 at the Crestview Manor Nursing Home in Belton, Texas (1103 Mary Jane).

The cause of her death was lung cancer (Note: In her book, Rambling Reflections, Pearl Digby said it was liver cancer). The funeral was on Monday at 2 pm at Heartfield Funeral Home in Belton; Dr. Leroy Kemp and Rev. Greg Nichols officiated.

Pearl (Griffin) Digby said that when she was a child, G.W. would let the kids burn the thorns off of the cactus and use them as fodder for the cows. They would stick the huge cactus with a pitchfork and then hold it over the fire.

In later years, G.W. Griffin had resided at 601 Surghnor in Belton, Texas. Mattie (Digby) Wesson remembers him not letting her pull the corn when she was a child because she would pull up the whole stalk. George Washington Griffin had sandy, dark red hair which he kept parted down the middle. Violet (White) Dolehite said that he was a very kind and quiet man; she mentioned that she had never seen him angry. G.W. and Bettie had the following children:

ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading and getting re-aquainted with the Griffin family. You did a great job researching! Some of best memories are when Doris (Griffin) Herrington, Kenneth, Al Moore and his wife Irene (Herrington) Moore all tried to teach me dominos. To this day I still Can't play dominos. Maybe it's the dots - I don't know. It certainly wasn't from their lack of trying. Arla and I named our youngest son Griffin - after the Griffin family name. The Herrington's and Griffin's are good people - the best!
